How to open a safe deposit box after a death

First find out whether there's a box. Then the rules depend on your state and the bank.

How to find out if there's a box

  • Look for small flat keys, often with a number on them.
  • Check bank statements for an annual rental fee.
  • Ask each bank they used. Bring a death certificate and proof of who you are.

Who can open it

A co-renter can usually keep using the box. Otherwise the bank will want proof of authority, usually court papers. Some states let a family member look inside for a will or burial papers with a bank employee present. Check your state's page, where we show the rule if we could verify it.

If nobody knows about the box

The FDIC says contents of abandoned boxes go to the state after a set time. Search unclaimed property too.

When you open it

Take a list and photos. Don't take anything out until you know you have the authority to do so. If you find a will, follow your state's rule for filing it.
