What to do with the original will
Whoever has the will must forward it to the court with jurisdiction with reasonable promptness after the death, in person or by registered mail. Someone who neglects this without good reason can owe damages.
"shall forward it to the court having jurisdiction with reasonable promptness after the death of the testator"
MCL 700.2516. Read the source (an unofficial copy of the law).
Wills deposited during life
Yes. A person, or someone acting for them, can deposit a sealed will with the court in the county where they live, for a fee, and get a certificate.
"may be deposited by the individual making the will, or by a person for him or her, with the court"

Opening a safe deposit box
An interested person can ask the probate court for an order letting a named person look in the box, with a bank employee present, for a will or burial plot deed. Any will or deed found goes to the probate register, and nothing else may be removed.
